Chunda Munki
South Africa’s Groove Innovator
A Deep Dive into South Africa’s Groove-Driven House Legacy
Chunda Munki
Inside the Heartbeat of South Africa’s House Culture
Chunda Munki stands as a powerful force in South Africa’s house scene. Chunda Munki continues to define energy and identity within local electronic music.
If South Africa’s house scene had a heartbeat, it might just sound like Chunda Munki. Born and bred in Johannesburg, Blayze Saunders has spent over a decade perfecting a style that stays funky, fearless, and unmistakably his own.
From underground beginnings to mainstage domination, Chunda Munki builds his name on pure energy — basslines that bounce, grooves that hypnotise, and rhythms that keep crowds dancing long after the lights fade.
A self-taught DJ and producer, he rises from backyard sessions to massive festivals like Ultra South Africa and Tomorrow World SA. He earns respect for both technical skill and the authenticity he brings to every set. His debut album Interference hit #1 on iTunes South Africa in 2017, and his 2025 release Six Songs For Whoever proves that his groove keeps evolving.
His story reflects hustle, heart, and hometown pride, showing that South Africa’s dance floors remain diverse and powerful. In this exclusive interview, he discusses his journey from underground culture to global stages, how he keeps his sound fresh, and why he prioritises connection, creativity, and keeping the dance alive.
Early Musical Awakening
He explains how his journey as “Chunda Munki” began in South Africa’s growing house-music movement. He never had formal exposure to dance music in his youth. The Bump CD’s were his only reference.
He preferred skating and motocross, which connected with rock, metal, and hip hop. In high school, he met a friend who owned hundreds of pirated house CDs. That moment reshaped everything.
One afternoon, he discovered Lady Lea’s Catch Me If You Can Vol.1. Track 11, the MYLO remix of Freeform Five – No More Conversations, changed everything. His parents drove him to Look & Listen that weekend so he could buy Lea’s album.
He collected music constantly and followed compilations like House Anthems, Soul Candi, and The Deeper Sounds series. He played tracks at house parties and slowly learned how to make music because it felt easier than learning a traditional instrument.
From Dark Rooms to Bigger Stages
His early sound thrives in dark, groove-driven club spaces, and he continues to draw from those influences.
Back then, he played in small rooms with fewer than twenty people. Opening or closing floors let him experiment and read crowds.
Big festival audiences demand higher energy than 120bpm underground tracks. He balances moody roots with driving, fun, and energetic grooves.
Lessons from Major Stages
His residencies – including a five-year run at Truth Nightclub – and festival performances teach him important lessons about connection.
He never fears chasing his dream. He feels blessed when thousands come to hear his music. Fans share emotional stories tied to his tracks. Those moments show that “none of us are really alone,” and music always offers love and connection.
Interference and a Career Turning Point
When his 2017 album Interference hit #1 on iTunes South Africa, it confirmed his path in the industry.
Much of the album was experimental, yet fans loved it. That success motivates him to remain authentic and avoid following trends.
A Global Groove
He gains strong international support through tours in Canada and releases on global platforms.
However, nothing compares to South Africa’s warmth and support. Whether playing a small midweek club or a massive festival, local crowds make him feel at home.
His philosophy remains simple:
“I never followed trends – I just followed the groove. If it makes me move, it’ll move someone else too.”
Where the Journey Heads Next
With Six Songs For Whoever (2025) out, he plans to revive darker, deeper roots while keeping high energy.
In 2026, he plans to focus on international opportunities. He feels ready to explore new stages, joking that it’s time for “this Munki to swing to another tree… just for a while.”
Chunda Munki continues to inspire South Africa’s house scene with authentic creativity, relentless energy, and unapologetic groove. His journey shows how identity and passion shape powerful careers in electronic music.
