The Steinberger Story

In 1979, Steinberger designed the L2 bass, which debuted at NAMM and was sold to notable musicians like John Entwistle and Tony Levin. By 1980, he founded Steinberger Sound Corporation and patented the L2 design. The L2 gained worldwide acclaim, winning multiple design awards in 1981 and 1982. Production expanded in 1983 with a move to Newburgh, NY. Innovations followed, including the TransTrem in 1984 and the S-Trem in 1985. The XL2 bass was chosen for an American design exhibition touring Eastern Europe. By 1987, Steinberger Sound was acquired by Gibson Guitar Corp. New models like the GM Series (1987), XQ Bass (1990), and updated GM and XM guitars (1991) further refined the brand. In 1992, Steinberger relocated to Nashville, TN, and introduced the affordable “Spirit by Steinberger” line, maintaining its signature design elements while using maple construction. Today, Steinberger continues its legacy of innovation in modern stringed instruments.
