Audiophile and DJ Performance
The Audio-Technica AT-LP140XP emerges as a compelling addition to the DJ-centric equipment landscape, catering to both professionals and audiophile enthusiasts.
Akin to its predecessor, the AT-LP120USB, this newer model elevates the experience with an assortment of enhancements, notably the inclusion of the AT-XP3 cartridge. This review delves into its features, sonic performance, and audiophile potential.
Build and Motor Enhancements
Structurally, the AT-LP140XP boasts a robust, heavier plinth and more damped construction, reducing feedback and low-frequency coloration. Its higher-torque motor ensures more stable and precise operation.
AT-XP3 Cartridge and Sound Quality
A significant highlight is the AT-XP3 cartridge, tailored for DJ demands with a conical stylus tip, V-Mount dual magnet construction, and excellent tracking capabilities for manual and back-cueing.
However, its DJ-oriented design contributes to inherent noise, somewhat detracting from its audiophile potential.
Audiophile Adjustments and Considerations
Sound-wise, the with a sturdy and responsive bass and an animated midrange. However, the DJ-tuned cartridge emphasizes certain frequencies, occasionally leading to a slightly edgy sound signature.
Experimenting with tracking force adjustments revealed intriguing results, balancing DJ requirements with audiophile expectations. Replacing the DJ-specific cartridge with an audiophile-oriented counterpart like the Ortofon 2M Red significantly improved sound quality, showcasing the turntable’s high-fidelity potential.
A Worthy Investment for DJs and Audiophiles
The Audio-Technica AT-LP140XP stands as a bridge between DJ functionality and audiophile aspirations. Its robust build, energetic performance, and responsive bass make it an intriguing choice for those seeking a fusion of utility and sonic vitality.
However, its DJ-oriented design limits its standing as a true audiophile turntable, presenting a trade-off for those prioritizing pristine sound quality.
Ultimately, it is ideal for those seeking a well-built, lively, and versatile turntable that balances DJing and audiophile listening.
