Two Decades of Deep – Celebrating 20 Years with a South African Pioneer
DJ Buhle is a defining voice in South Africa’s deep house and dub music culture. Born in Soweto, she has been a pioneer since 2005. With a career that spans two decades, DJ Buhle continues to inspire with her hypnotic sound and authentic journey.
As one of South Africa’s most respected female DJs, she has earned multiple accolades. Her titles include Best Female DJ 2019 and Top 10 Deep House Female DJ 2020. Fans celebrate her consistency, artistry, and dedication to the deep house movement.
A 20-Year Journey in Music
In 2025, she marks 20 years in music. Her career includes timeless productions like Winter’s Call and Autumn Tips. She has also performed at global stages including Ultra and Adjuna. Residencies with Deep Town Jozi cemented her as a household name. Recently, she opened for Nora En Pure for a second consecutive year.

Passion Rooted in Sound
Her love for music began while listening to Sunday Surgery on 5FM with Roger Goode. Inspired by sound, she trained under Slaka Vega in 2005. That same week, she secured work to fund her first records. Alongside DJing, she studied Radio/TV Presenting and Drama. With skills in I.T. and Project Management, she always envisioned a creative career.

Shaped by Soweto and Growth Over Two Decades
Growing up in Soweto and Johannesburg shaped her unique sound and resilience. Being one of the first female DJs was not easy, but she learned to stand out by staying true and always playing her heart out. Over the past two decades, she describes her growth as intense, challenging, yet rewarding. The music industry has shifted toward “numbers and influence,” but she continues to adapt while managing her own record label.
Despite her success, she admits to still feeling nervous before playing, a powerful reminder of her authenticity.
Milestones, Global Stages, and Inspiration in 2025
Every performance is a milestone, but winning Best Female DJ 2023 for 3 Jester Street stands out as epic. From residencies to major festivals, each stage reflects her dedication. Opening for Nora En Pure in consecutive years elevated her global recognition, while performances at Ultra and Adjuna strengthened her reputation as a world-class DJ. She remains inspired through rituals, self-reflection, and celebrating small wins. By staying grounded, she adapts to the ever-changing music scene. Watching her own sets allows her to refine her craft and continue evolving.

Challenges and What’s Next for DJ Buhle
As a female DJ, she has often faced being undermined for her style and quiet demeanor. Yet, she responds with calmness and kindness, proving herself through powerful sets that showcase her talent. In 2025, she is releasing Look At You, a heartfelt track featuring her own vocals, dedicated to peers facing struggles. Alongside this release, she is launching NameThatMix and exploring international collaborations, marking the next exciting chapter in her career.
