South Africa’s vinyl DJ culture – A New Chapter
Mr Vinyl Invites…
South Africa’s vinyl DJ culture is thriving again, thanks to a bold new project called Mr Vinyl Invites….
This initiative highlights real DJing, real records, and a renewed focus on South Africa’s vinyl DJ culture.
There’s something magical about watching a vinyl DJ work. No screens, no shortcuts – just focus, skill, and a deep connection to music. That’s the essence of this project.
Who is Mr Vinyl?
Mr Vinyl is one of Johannesburg’s most iconic record stores. For over 12 years, it has been the ultimate destination for DJs, collectors, and music lovers. The store offers everything from hip hop and house to jazz, soul, and funk. More than a shop, it has built a thriving community centered on vinyl.
South Africa’s best DJs have visited Mr Vinyl. Some test new records quietly, while others deliver surprise in-store sets. After witnessing these unforgettable moments, the team decided to capture them properly.
What is Mr Vinyl Invites…?
Mr Vinyl Invites… is a new, invite-only video series featuring one-hour live vinyl DJ sets recorded in-store. These sets aren’t promoted or announced. A DJ is invited, the cameras roll, and shoppers get to experience the magic in real time.
The energy is raw and unexpected. Customers often arrive to buy records but find themselves in the middle of a live set. The response is always joy, surprise, and excitement.
The debut featured DJ Dokta OOZ, followed by a standout performance from Abby Nurock, a deep house specialist. Upcoming sets will include top international house DJs and a leading South African techno artist.

The Tools Behind the Turntables
This project is powered by Pioneer DJ gear, including PLX-1000 turntables and HDJ-CUE1 headphones. As the official distributor of Pioneer DJ in South Africa, Proaudio proudly supports initiatives like this that celebrate authenticity and artistry.
Why It Matters
This series is not just nostalgia. It shows DJing in its purest form – beatmatching by ear, crate digging, and reading the crowd. Each performance reminds us of the skill and artistry behind vinyl DJing.
With every set uploaded to YouTube, local DJs gain a global platform. Viewers experience music that’s real, raw, and musically rich.

Looking Ahead
Mr Vinyl continues its mission to showcase South Africa’s vinyl scene – one performance at a time. The invite-only format, live in-store energy, and surprise appearances make Mr Vinyl Invites… one of the most exciting projects in local music today.
Follow Mr Vinyl on social media and YouTube – you never know who will spin next.
