Through his PhD at University of KwaZulu-Natal, Mashiloane developed a more intentional and critical perspective on jazz identity and heritage. This journey affirmed that lived experience itself holds value as a form of research, encouraging him to explore the cultural origins shaping his musical understanding.
As a result, his compositions now reflect deeper awareness, as he engages with local knowledge systems and cultural meaning, allowing his academic work and musical practice to continuously inform one another.

Recording Isigqi at Bird’s Eye Jazz Club created an environment for authentic musical and cultural exchange, where South African rhythmic identities met international perspectives. Mashiloane blends jazz, gospel, funk, hip hop, and indigenous sounds, yet he avoids rigid categorisation by focusing on honest and meaningful expression. In his approach, tradition and innovation exist within the same continuum, allowing the music to remain grounded while evolving naturally.
