Michael Wilson-Trollip’s Music Journey
A Dynamic Creative Evolution
The Michael Wilson-Trollip’s music journey showcases a seamless blend of creativity and technical precision. Exploring Michael Wilson-Trollip’s music journey reveals how he has grown across studio production and live performance.
Cape Town–based keyboardist, composer, music director, and producer Michael Wilson-Trollip continues to evolve. Moving between grand piano performance, synth programming, and live direction, he demonstrates technical mastery and creative instinct at every turn.
From Studio to Stage
Over the past year, his career path has remained dynamic. Shifts from film and television scoring led him to direct GoodLuck’s high-energy show season. He merges electronic production with live musicianship, creating seamless, high-impact performances.
Michael adapts to every environment with precision. His streamlined setups feature the Nord Lead A1 and Nord Electro, enabling him to execute over 180 patch changes from a single keyboard. This approach embodies the modern musician.
Stepping Into New Creative Spaces
He continues expanding his creative reach by producing and promoting his own TOTO Experience Tribute Show. This step highlights his dedication to vision, preparation, and courage.
In this exclusive interview, Proaudio explores mobility in production, live performance pressure, and South Africa’s music industry realities.
The past year has been a whirlwind of live shows, new projects, and content creation. Producing a brand-new show also pushed him into new creative spaces.
Adapting in a Changing Industry
Michael explains that his focus shifted throughout the year. While the year started in the studio, he ended in the live performance world. The South African music industry demanded constant adaptability. When film slowed, live performance opportunities opened up, and now both sectors are growing again.
Mobility and Modern Production
Mobility has reshaped his creative workflow. He now works mainly on a laptop and a Nord Lead A1, stripping his setup to only essential tools.
This approach ensures every track sounds like a proper studio production. Frequently, he finalizes arrangements backstage minutes before performances, creating an adrenaline-driven workflow.
Live Performance, Technical Mastery, and Career Highlights
Touring with GoodLuck proved transformative. Michael directed their December and January shows while blending EDM elements with live musicianship, deepening his understanding of energy, pacing, and audience connection.
He also recognizes the strong connection between studio work and live performance. Many studio opportunities originated from relationships built on stage. Trust, collaboration, and real-time problem-solving remain central to his approach.
His theatre work introduced new technical challenges. Performing multiple musical roles on a single keyboard, he manages over 180 patch changes across strings, percussion, and atmospheric effects. Pushing the Nord Electro to its limits has refined his keyboard programming and technical preparation, allowing him to recreate a full ensemble with a reduced band.
One defining achievement highlights this chapter of his career. Directing GoodLuck’s show season brought both pressure and reward, requiring strong creative leadership and precise technical control at scale.
Looking Ahead
The upcoming TOTO Experience Tribute Show excites him the most. Michael will perform while also producing and promoting, celebrating iconic musicianship and production excellence. This project represents a full-circle creative milestone.
His philosophy remains clear: Preparation creates freedom, enabling fearless creativity on stage.
