Every successful artist has a story, and behind many great songs stands an exceptional producer. This Ollyvans Interview introduces one of South Africa’s most respected young producers. From Richards Bay to the Studio
Olly van Schalkwyk, known professionally as Ollyvans, discovered music at 13 after buying his first guitar with his father. Inspired by The Parlotones and Dire Straits, he quickly developed a passion for performing and songwriting.
After studying sound engineering at Cape Audio College, he found that real studio experience became his greatest teacher.
Building a Career
Starting from a small apartment studio in Kenilworth, Olly gradually expanded his equipment and opportunities. Today, Ollyvans Studios in the Cape Winelands produces music for many South African Afrikaans artists while also working with major record labels.
A Versatile Musician
Working with artists including Juan Boucher, Tasché Burger, and Sunset Sweatshop has taught Olly to embrace different genres. He believes producers should remain adaptable, continue learning, and never fear failure.
Creating Music His Way
Olly usually begins every production by building the chord structure on guitar or keys before adding the remaining instruments. He records vocals last, allowing artists to perform with the complete production in mind.
As a multi-instrumentalist, his Gibson Les Paul, Epiphone SG Pro, and Gibson Thunderbird Bass remain essential tools for creating his signature sound.
Looking to the Future
Alongside producing full-time, Olly continues pursuing his dream as a recording artist. He plans to release more original music while embracing new technology and performing on South Africa’s biggest stages.
