Alexandra Collett
The Geologist of Groove
Shaping Cape Town’s Music Scene
Alexandra Collett
The Geologist of Groove
Alexandra Collett – The Geologist of Groove is a Cape Town-based multi-instrumentalist, vocalist, and composer. She bridges science and music with remarkable ease. Her journey began in childhood and grew into a lifelong pursuit of connection through sound.
Trained in classical vocals and drums, Alexandra later mastered guitar, bass, piano, and percussion. This versatility fuels her creativity and shapes the sound of every project she joins.
She currently fronts her retro-rock band Stonehouse while performing with surf-rock legends Krakatoa, indie-folk artist Brandon Grant, and blues-folk-rock ensemble DreamEater. At the heart of her sound lies the 1975 Vintage Gibson L6-S, a guitar that reflects her respect for tone, tradition, and artistry.
A Lifelong Musical Calling and Songwriting Freedom
Music surrounded Alexandra from an early age. From family sing-alongs to imitating classic rock, music never left her side. A defining moment came at age ten when a drum teacher’s showcase inspired her to begin lessons. From then on, she embraced music as healing and vowed to share it with others.
Her ability to explore many instruments gave Alexandra freedom in composition. She views songs as interconnected ecosystems, where each instrument’s range complements the whole. This perspective enriches her approach to songwriting with Stonehouse and beyond.
The Gibson’s Role in Stonehouse
Alexandra’s 1975 Vintage Gibson L6-S has refined Stonehouse’s tone and identity. Its comfort and warm sound inspire her daily playing. While it hasn’t dictated direction, it enables her visions to come alive. Inspired by heroes like Jerry Garcia, Alexandra pays homage to psychedelic rock’s golden era.
Women in Music
Alexandra acknowledges the challenges women face in the male-dominated music industry. She encourages young women to find supportive communities, remain true to their vision, and never lose heart. She celebrates the rise of female-led bands in South Africa’s rock and punk scenes, calling for unity and collaboration.
Looking Ahead
Alexandra plans to record with her bands and perform at festivals across South Africa and abroad. Her music reflects the bond between nature and humanity while inviting listeners to connect deeply. Her ultimate goal is authenticity and joy in the shared experience of music.
“Music connects us all, and that’s what I want listeners to take away from the experience – to connect.” – Alexandra Collett
